Working towards a roll-out of smart mobility in the UAE
The UAE is one of the fastest growing vehicle markets in the world: between 2010 and 2014 alone, the sales of light-duty vehicles such as passenger cars, SUVs and light-trucks more than doubled. With an estimated 15% of the UAE’s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions coming from our roads, sustainable transport clearly offers a major opportunity for the UAE to realise its climate pledges, both as part of the UAE National Climate Change Plan and the Paris Agreement.
With a growing interest in low-carbon transportation across the globe, the UAE is well-positioned to benefit from the on-going drive for alternative vehicle technologies and transport systems. The country has already rolled out a number of exciting new policies and large-scale investments aimed at decreasing GHG emissions from the transport sector. Further action in this area would not only boost the nation’s carbon-cutting achievements but also the UAE’s international reputation as a sustainability leader.
WHAT EWS-WWF IS DOING
EWS-WWF’s Climate and Energy team works tirelessly to support the UAE’s march towards a low carbon future. We do this through projects that cover three main areas: renewable energy, energy and water efficiency, and sustainable transport.
EWS-WWF has previously partnered with the Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (ESMA) to study and design a new vehicle fuel economy standard for the UAE, under the aegis of the Ecological Footprint Initiative (EFI). The standard is currently being developed by ESMA.
Going forward, two of the main focal points of our work will be to increase the fuel efficiency of existing fleets and to investigate the potential of alternative vehicle technologies in the UAE. For example, moves to electrify road transport have gained immense momentum worldwide and have already garnered significant attention in the UAE, with a number of initiatives now in place to increase uptake of electric vehicles.
With our proven experience in sustainable transport and our focus on reducing the country’s carbon emissions, EWS-WWF is exploring the exciting topic of electric vehicles with its partners. Our main goal is to actively support the government’s development of up-to-date, locally relevant and evidence-based policies, which will be essential for the UAE to meet existing and potential future climate pledges.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
Together with our partners, we have a solid track record of creating and contributing to innovative, science-based policies to reduce carbon emissions. We actively welcome new partnerships to further accelerate the nation’s transition to a low carbon future.
