Emirates Wildlife Society (EWS) is a UAE environmental non-governmental organization, established under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s representative in the Western Region and Chairman of Environmental Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD).
EWS works in association with WWF, one of the world’s largest and most respected independent conservation Organizations. EWS-WWF has been active in the UAE since 2001 and has successfully initiated and implemented several conservation and education projects and initiatives in the region.
EWS-WWF works federally and in the region with offices in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Fujairah and is governed by a local board of directors.
Job summary
The Communications Manager- Programmes is responsible for developing and executing communications strategy for the conservation and climate change programmes, in close liaison with Programme Leaders, Conservation and Climate Director, and Communications Director. The role holder will seek to position EWS-WWF as a credible organisation to partner with to deliver conservation action among government, private sector and/or relevant target groups while raising brand awareness.
Major duties and responsibilities
  • Work closely with the Communications Director, Conservation and Climate Director and Project Leader, to jointly develop realistic and pragmatic communication strategies and plans for 2018, to positively contribute to the conservation outcomes and impact while raising brand awareness.
  •  Work closely with the Brand Manager and the Communications Director to ensure that the conservation and climate programmes communications strategies are aligned with the overall communications strategy for EWS-WWF.
  • Work with Conservation team to ensure full stakeholder identification mapping and analysis is undertaken and maintained.
  • Implement the communication plans and strategies in close collaboration with the conservation and climate teams on delivery of content via centralised platforms and targeted channels.
  • Create and deliver a content calendar for conservation communications and integrate this into the brand content calendar where relevant.
  • Liaise with the PR agency (in close collaboration with the Brand Manager) to create and implement PR plans for EWS-WWF that reflect its new strategy and organise relevant media training for EWS-WWF spokesperson
  • Develop programme related communications collateral, coordinate with agencies and designers on specific tasks, and liaise with project teams to deliver activities related to promoting programme topics.
  • Provide ongoing support to the Programme spokespeople, preparing speaking points and coordinating with PR/ creative agencies
  • Proactively contribute content to editorial calendar, highlighting key milestones and stories (offline and online content)
  • Ensure that the website and other online platforms and channels are optimised and fully utilised to engage with key stakeholders and audiences.  
  • Contribute data to the Communications monthly report/ dash board, working closely with the Communications Coordinator
  • Participate in key annual project reviews, planning workshops and attend Communicators regular meetings, as well as Conservation regular meetings
  • Manage Communications budget within programmes, and report to Communications Director and Programme leader as appropriate
  • Internal training and capacity building on communications: Work closely with the Communications Director and Conservation & Conservation Director to identify capacity gaps among the wider team, and ensure that guides, training and processes are up to date and conducted regularly.
  • Mentor the Communications Coordinator on Conservation Communications.
  • Partnership Management- Responsible for account management with Partners as outlined in the Strategic Partnership strategy and utilizing Salesforces.
  • Any additional duties as required by workload or request from Communications Director.
Required qualifications
  • 4+ years in a communications field (communications, advertising, journalism, digital, campaigns)
  • Experience in a broad range of communications disciplines highly desirable
  • Experience in Climate Change, Marine, Wildlife or Terrestrial Biodiversity communications highly desirable
  • Experience in NGOs, nonprofits or community groups is highly desirable
  • Arabic language is highly desirable
  • Bachelor degree in marketing, mass-communication, digital, social marketing or behaviour change

  • Knowledge of publishing process (content, design, printing, distribution)
  • Pragmatic strategic thinker, entrepreneurial and resourceful

  • Passionate about environmental conservation
